Karushan is a
wonderful boy who has been dealt a terrible hand in life. When he was 6 years of age he was diagnosed
with a brain tumor. Unable to handle the
problems, his mother left him with his grandmother, already struggling with her
own load, including caring for her own mother. Karushan endured surgery and intensive radiation
which effected him greatly. We first
encountered the family in late 2005. To
help with expenses, we built a small roadside stand where the grandmother could
sell food items. Karushan was without
many friends and unable to play normal games of childhood. We made a point of visiting him often and
taking games he could play by himself.
(inser photo) He truly blossomed. About a year later his sight in one eye
started to dim and over the ensuing months he lost
sight completely in that
eye. In February, 2008 we took Karushan
to Appolo Hospital to meet with a private neurosurgeon. The diagnosis was devastating. His tumor was growing and the only thing
surgery could do was perhaps keep him from losing sight in the other eye. Crushed, as we are each time we face such
sadness, we will nevertheless work to keep him as happy and loved as possible
for whatever time he has left.
