The Little
Sisters of the Poor run two wonderful facilities for the aged in Sri
Lanka. The Elder Homes, while modest, rival anything in the U.S.
in terms of cleanliness, quality of food and loving care. These sisters have dedicated their lives to
the care of the elderly and raise all their money by begging on the streets. As with most hospital facilities in Sri
Lanka, their infirmary is plagued by flies
and mosquitoes.During a trip in 2008, we brought them several electric bug-zappers.In addition, we have
contracted a local unemployed carpenter to build coffins as needed when the
Elder Home residents die.
